Handmade Business: Do You Need a Website Now or Later
By Abhinav Gadekar, SmolBusiness
“My shop is too small. Buyers like to talk to me. A website will look big and cold.” Most handmade sellers feel this. The doubt stays till the first unpaid custom order hurts.
Here is a plain answer for crochet, gift and art shops. When should chat stay, and when should a store link take over.
You do not need a website on day one. Take one when chat work starts eating real time. That is when payment follow ups take one hour daily, or new buyers fear to pay in chat.
“My shop is too small”
This is often true in the start. Few customs in a month with fast payers can run in DMs. Only add two habits. One, a written brief with scope, price, date and policy. Two, no material buying before money shows on the order.
Small does not mean free. The rule is same at all sizes.
“Buyers like my personal touch”
Keep it. A store does not take your voice. It only takes repeat work. Price repeats, size lists, payment check, order status. Your replies stay warm. Tell buyers, “Chat with me for design. Use the link to lock your slot.”
“Setup will be hard”
For customs, setup is one link per brief. Start with manual UPI, which is the default. The buyer pays from checkout and adds proof on the order. You match amount to order ID. Add your Razorpay keys later, when night checking gets heavy. COD is separate and stays pending till you confirm.
- Photos stay in chat. Final short point goes in the order note.
- Each quote gets a short last date.
- Making starts only from paid orders in your list.
One limit to know. SmolBusiness takes full amount in one order. There is no half now and half later in the same order. For step payments, use a billing tool. For normal fixed price customs, see the storefront guide and payment words guide.
Shift order work out of DMsSimple rule to keep
DMs were fine when each order got your full time. They fail when each order still needs it. At that stage, add shape. One brief, one link, work from paid orders only. Keep your care for design, packing and updates. Create your free store today and move your next custom order to a link.

- Is my handmade shop too small for a store?
- If customs are few and buyers pay fast, DMs with a written brief are enough. Move when follow ups and screenshots grow.
- Will a store make my brand cold?
- No. Design talk stays in chat. The link only takes price, size, payment and tracking load.
- How much setup does a custom link need?
- One product link per brief on manual UPI to start. Add your Razorpay keys when checking takes too long each night.
- Can I take half payment now and half later?
- No, not in one order. Each checkout takes full amount. For step payments, use a separate billing tool.
