Custom-order storefront India

A custom-order storefront that protects your work before you begin.

A custom-order storefront gives Indian crochet, gifting, art and personalised-product sellers a safer handoff after the creative discussion. Agree the scope in Instagram DMs, send the customer to a clear product and checkout, collect the configured payment, and begin only when the order is real—not when someone types ‘confirmed’. SmolBusiness structures that purchase without taking the personal conversation away.

A promise in chat is not the same as a paid order

Custom work needs conversation. The risk begins when materials and hours are committed before that conversation becomes a structured, paid order.

Where custom sellers get exposed

The supplied seller story is painfully familiar: a maker finished a ₹1,200 custom bouquet, then the customer disappeared. The amount is anecdotal, but the workflow risk is real whenever work begins before payment.

Protect the repeatable parts without flattening the creative process

SmolBusiness does not replace the conversation that makes custom work special. It gives the agreed purchase a clearer point of commitment and one order record.

💬

Discuss the brief in DMs

Keep references, recommendations and unusual requests in the channel where a real conversation is useful.

🏷️

Use products and variants for clear choices

List repeatable bases, sizes, colours or formats as products and variants so the customer knows what they are choosing.

📝

Capture a final checkout note

Customers can add up to 500 characters of special instructions, delivery preferences or a message with the order.

💳

Take payment before production

Use manual UPI proof or your own Razorpay setup to collect the complete checkout amount before you begin the custom work.

📋

Keep payment with the order

The chosen product, buyer details, expected total and payment status stay in one record instead of separate chats.

📦

Give the order a visible next step

Move confirmed work through fulfilment states and let the buyer follow progress instead of asking from scratch.

Do not start the next custom order on a promise.

Agree the creative details personally, then give the customer one clear link to confirm the product, address and payment.

A practical custom-order workflow

  1. 1

    Discuss what the customer wants

Confirm the scope, price, realistic production time and what changes are included before sending a payment link.

  2. 2

Point them to the agreed product

Use a suitable product or variant for repeatable choices. Keep highly unusual commissions in conversation until the scope is final.

  3. 3

Ask them to check the summary

Make sure the product description, selected variant and final message reflect the agreed work before checkout.

  4. 4

    Collect the full checkout payment

Begin production only after manual UPI proof is approved or Razorpay confirms the payment on your connected account.

  5. 5

    Work from the structured order

Use the order for the buyer, delivery address, payment context and fulfilment state; keep the DM thread for creative discussion.

  6. 6

Update the buyer as the order moves

Set clear expectations for custom production and communicate exceptions before the customer has to chase you.

Be clear about what this storefront does—and does not do

“My orders need a creative discussion first.”

Keep that discussion in DMs. The storefront begins after the scope and price are agreed, giving the final purchase a structured handoff.

“I only want to take a 50% deposit.”

SmolBusiness does not currently split one order into deposit and balance stages. This page recommends collecting the full checkout amount before starting, not promising native partial-payment tracking.

“Customers need to upload reference artwork.”

Checkout supports a text note, not a custom artwork-upload field. Collect files in DMs and use the checkout note for a short final reference or instruction.

“What if a customer changes the brief later?”

Confirm your change policy in writing before payment. SmolBusiness stores the order; it does not provide revision approvals or contract management.

Keep creative choices flexible. Make commitment unambiguous.

Use conversation for the brief and checkout for the point where the customer becomes a paid order.

Questions, answered

What is a custom-order storefront?
A custom-order storefront is the buying layer used after a seller and customer agree the scope of personalised work. It shows the agreed product or variant, collects buyer and delivery details, takes the configured payment and creates an order record. Creative discussion can still happen in Instagram DMs.
Can I take advance payment for a custom order on SmolBusiness?
You can collect the complete checkout amount before beginning work through manual UPI proof or your connected Razorpay account. SmolBusiness does not currently split one order into a deposit and later balance. If your policy requires partial advances, that staged workflow is not natively tracked today.
Should a handmade seller take payment before starting custom work?
Set a written policy that reflects your material cost, production time and ability to resell the finished item. SmolBusiness can support a full-payment-before-production workflow, but it does not decide the commercial policy for you. Explain the price, scope and cancellation terms clearly before the customer pays.
Can customers describe personalisation at checkout?
Checkout includes a text note of up to 500 characters for special instructions, delivery preferences or a message. It is useful for a short name, colour reminder or reference. It is not a file-upload, proof-approval or multi-stage revision system, so detailed creative briefs should stay in DMs.
Can I keep discussing custom orders on Instagram?
Yes. Instagram DMs are often the right place to understand references, recommend options and agree a custom brief. Once the product, scope and price are clear, send the storefront link so the customer enters their own details and completes payment before you commit materials or production time.
Does a paid storefront stop every customer from ghosting?
No. People may still stop replying during the enquiry stage. The storefront protects the production stage by giving you a clear policy: do not begin until the agreed order is paid. It reduces exposure after commitment; it cannot guarantee that every enquiry becomes a purchase.
Does SmolBusiness hold the customer’s money?
No. Manual UPI payments go to the seller’s UPI account and Razorpay payments use the seller’s connected Razorpay account. SmolBusiness does not collect customer funds and settle them later. The payment method is configured by the seller for the store.
Is this suitable for crochet, gifting and commissioned art?
It suits repeatable custom products whose base, price and options can be represented clearly, with detailed discussion handled separately. It is less suitable when every commission needs staged quotes, uploaded artwork, proof approvals, milestone payments or changing balances because those workflows are not native SmolBusiness features.

Protect the work before the first stitch, cut or brushstroke.

Create your SmolBusiness store, agree the custom brief, and collect payment before production begins.
