Have you outgrown DMs?

When should you move your Instagram business to a website?

An Instagram business needs a website at the point where answering DMs stops being selling and starts being admin: the same questions every day, enquiries you never saw, more than a handful of orders a week, and money lost to double-sold stock and buyers who go quiet. Below that point, DMs are genuinely the right tool and you should stay there.

Signs it is time

  • ✓Three or more of the seven above are true of a normal week, not just your busiest one.
  • ✓You have lost at least one order to a missed message or a double-sold item.
  • ✓You are turning down or delaying orders because you cannot keep up with the messages.
  • ✓People are asking for a link, or hesitating before paying a stranger by UPI.
  • ✓You want to run a sale or a launch and know the DMs will not survive it.

Signs you have NOT outgrown DMs yet

  • ✓You are doing fewer than about four or five orders a week and replying to everyone the same day.
  • ✓Nothing is getting missed. You open Instagram, and the enquiries are handled.
  • ✓Your catalogue is five or six pieces and each one is made to order anyway.
  • ✓You are still testing what sells, and the conversation in DMs is where you learn it.
  • ✓You are pre-launch with no audience yet. Build the audience first, the store solves nothing without it.

7 signs you have outgrown Instagram DMs

You post a reel and five people DM “price?”. Two ask about sizes, one asks for your UPI ID, three go quiet, and one says they will pay tonight and never does. None of that means you are doing it wrong. It means one person is now the whole shop. Count how many of these are true of your last seven days.

⏰

Fix the free things first

Put prices in every caption. Pin a story highlight with sizes, shipping and delivery time. Write one saved reply for “price?”. If that clears your evening, you have not outgrown DMs and you have spent nothing finding out.

💰

Ask for advance payment in writing

A copyable line beats a policy: “I hold the piece for 12 hours once payment is done — here is my UPI ID.” Ghosting drops sharply the moment holding stock is tied to paying, and this costs you nothing to try tonight.

🔗

One link instead of one reply each

The point of a store is not that Instagram stopped working. It is that browsing, prices, sizes and stock stop needing you in the loop, so a follower at midnight can see everything without waiting for morning.

🧾

The order arrives assembled

Items, variant, customer, address and payment status land together as one record instead of three messages you reassemble later. Nothing to copy out of a chat, nothing to lose.

🏦

Your UPI, your bank, your money

Payments go to your own UPI ID or your own Razorpay keys. The platform never touches customer money and takes no cut of a sale, so moving to a store does not mean losing a percentage of every order.

📉

Fewer “has it shipped?” messages

Buyers follow their own order from placed to delivered without an account, and get WhatsApp and email updates as it moves. The check-in DMs drop off on their own.

If it is time, what moving actually looks like

  1. 1

Keep Instagram exactly as it is

Instagram is better than any website at reach, reels, comments and social proof, and none of that changes. What moves is the transaction: browsing, prices, variants, address, payment and tracking.

  2. 2

Sign up with your phone number

Phone and OTP, no passwords. You get a themed storefront on your own subdomain, and you can connect your own custom domain later if you want one.

  3. 3

Put up your five or ten best sellers

Do not migrate the whole catalogue on day one. Add your top pieces with images, prices, variants and stock, and let the rest follow once you have seen the first orders land.

  4. 4

Connect payments the way you already take them

Manual UPI keeps your current flow — a QR built from your own UPI ID, the buyer uploads the screenshot, and you approve it in a queue. Or connect your own Razorpay keys and let orders confirm automatically.

  5. 5

Put the link in your bio and answer with it

Next time someone DMs “price?”, send the link. Keep replying to the people who want to talk. The difference is that the ones who just wanted a price can now get one without you.

Questions, answered

When does an Instagram business need a website?
When admin starts costing more than it returns: the same questions daily, enquiries you are missing, more than about five orders a week, and stock or payments going wrong. Under that, DMs are cheaper and more personal, and you should stay in them. The trigger is your workload, not your follower count.
How many orders a week before I need a store?
There is no fixed number, but around five or six orders a week is where manual collection of name, address, variant and payment screenshot starts taking an hour a day. Below that the admin is minutes. Above it, a store usually pays for itself in time saved before it pays for itself in extra sales.
Do I need a lot of followers first?
No, but you do need an audience that is already messaging you. A store makes ordering easy for people who already want to buy. It does not create demand on its own. If nobody is DMing yet, spend the time on content and reach first, and come back when the enquiries start arriving.
Will I lose the personal touch my customers like?
You keep it, because you keep Instagram. Replies, comments and DMs stay exactly where they are. What moves out of the conversation is the repetitive part: prices, sizes, stock, address and payment. Most sellers find they have more time for real conversations once the mechanical ones stop.
Should I stop selling in DMs completely?
No. Most sellers run both for a long time. Send the link to people who just want to see prices, and keep taking orders in DMs for regulars or custom pieces. Over time more buyers use the link on their own, because it is faster for them than waiting for a reply.
Is it hard to set up a store if I am not technical?
Setup is a phone number and an OTP, then adding products with images, prices and stock. There is no code and no hosting to arrange. Adding your first few products takes about the same time as photographing them, and you can start with a handful rather than your whole catalogue.
What does it cost me per order?
Nothing per order. There is zero commission on your sales on every plan, and customer payments go straight to your own UPI ID or your own Razorpay account. There is a free tier to start on, so you can see whether it fixes your evenings before deciding anything.
What if I move and it does not help?
Then the problem was demand, not admin, and that is worth knowing early. This is why the honest test matters: if you are not missing enquiries and not doing many orders a week, a store will not change your numbers. Fix reach first, and move the ordering once the DMs are genuinely full.
